Be ready for winter break
A voluntary partial closure during winter break will reduce hours and availability in many offices. Employees can help with energy savings by unplugging equipment, lowering thermostats and turning off lights before they leave. Offices should post winter break hours on websites and establish coverage of incoming calls and emails. Spring semester classes begin Jan. 14.
Lincoln Way lane closures are for ash tree removal
City of Ames crews are removing ash trees from the Lincoln Way median (between Beach and Hayward avenues) Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 17-18. Lincoln Way traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction during the workday. Ash trees are being removed as part of the city's 20-year Emerald Ash Borer response plan. The city currently is in year five of that plan. In fall 2019, trees will be planted near the locations where ash trees are being removed.
Chemistry Stores' customer appreciation is Dec. 18
The Chemistry Stores staff invites its customers to a winter appreciation open house on Tuesday, Dec. 18 (8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., 1351 Gilman). Snacks and refreshments will be available.
Register now for annual P&S conference
Registration is open for the 7th annual Professional and Scientific Professional Development Conference, Cultivate Your Adventure: Planting the Seeds of Success, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019 (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Scheman Building). Sessions will focus on cultivating professional as well as personal development on topics related to leadership, health and wellness, professional resources and human interactions. Experience growth, encouragement and positive social interactions with your colleagues while gaining skills and knowledge you can use. Registration is $100 through Jan. 28 and $120 from Jan. 29 to Feb. 12. Additional information, including the registration site, is online.
ISU Police phone test scheduled for Dec. 20
ISU Police will test redundancy of its phone system on Thursday, Dec. 20 (10 a.m.-noon) to ensure continued reliable communication with dispatch. Anyone calling the non-emergency ISU Police phone number, 515-294-4428, may experience intermittent outages during this time. An alternate number, 515-294-1777, is available, and in an outage, 911 calls automatically roll to the Ames Police Department.
Tickets for Dane Cook performance go on sale Friday
Dane Cook's "Tell It Like It Is" tour is coming to Stephens Auditorium Oct. 3, 2019 (7:30 p.m. ). Tickets for the general public, which range from $39.50 to $59.50, go on sale at noon Friday, Dec. 14, via LiveNation. Cook is a stand-up comedian and a versatile actor who has appeared in both films and television.
Submit to library course reserve now for spring semester
Instructors who wish to place required materials on reserve for spring semester should submit requests now. Forms are online.
Share your thoughts on campustown business lineup
The Campustown Action Association is conducting a survey to find out what services and businesses users think are missing from the neighborhood. ISU faculty and staff are an audience the group would like to hear from. Take the four-question survey online before the end of this month.
Instructors sought for TAG summer camps
The Office of Admissions Early Outreach seeks faculty, staff, graduate students and local teachers who want to teach summer camp courses for talented and gifted students entering grades 3-11 in the fall. Instructors are monetarily compensated for their time in the classroom. Proposals are due Jan. 18, 2019. For more information or to submit a proposal, visit the instructor proposal website. - Adventures (week 1 June 17-21, week 2 June 24-28), grades 3-6
- Discoveries (June 10-13), grades 7-8

Save the date for Cyclone Family Weekend
Cyclone Family Weekend 2019 will be held Oct 11-13. Students and their families are invited to enjoy a lineup of activities on camps and around Ames. Check the Cyclone Family Weekend website for updates on registration, events and other details.
Veterans Center is on the move
Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, the Veterans Center, established in 2012 within the office of the registrar, will transition to the dean of students office. The center's mission is focused on the success of veterans, military personnel and family members, a unique student population, similar to the goals of the international students and scholars office, center for LGBTQIA+ student success and office of multicultural student affairs, which all reside in the dean of students office. The Veterans Center team, responsible for providing programming, services and support to veteran and military-affiliated students, will continue to collaborate with the registrar's office and the veterans certification team. The center's location remains in 3540 Memorial Union.
Volunteers needed for statewide Science Bowls in January, February
Ames Laboratory Science Bowl is seeking 150 volunteers, both scientific and nonscientific, for its 2019 regional competitions, High School Science Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 26, and Middle School Science Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 16 (8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day on campus). Student teams from across Iowa will square off in fast-paced, game-show style rounds of questions from a wide range of science and math disciplines. Volunteers serve as moderators, judges, timekeepers, scorekeepers and runners, and receive a buffet lunch, T-shirt and other goodies. Shifts range from 4 to 8 hours.
