Registration is open for talented and gifted summer camps
The office of admissions-early outreach (OPPTAG) invites talented and gifted students in grades 3-11 to participate in various academically challenging summer programs and extracurricular activities that provide social enrichment. Many new courses are available this year, including STEM, arts, design, social sciences, engineering and more. Eligibility requirements, course listings and an application are available online. Second request to delay FLSA appeal is approved
As of Feb. 27th, the Trump administration's second request to delay a federal court's appeal on the November 2016 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime regulation injunction was granted by the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on Feb. 17. This action will delay the final brief for another 60 days. The administration again cited a need to "allow incoming leadership personnel adequate time to consider the issues." The Department of Justice now has until May 1 to file its response. Iowa State wil continue to wait for the courts to resolve this issue before addressing changes to FLSA.
Nominations sought for 2017-18 leadership class
The office of the senior vice president and provost seeks nominations for the 2017-18 cohort of the Emerging Leaders Academy. The academy is open to faculty and P&S staff in all divisions, whether currently in a leadership role or aspiring to such positions. Participants attend monthly sessions led by on-campus and outside experts, and members complete modules in areas such as strategic planning, budget development, performance management, understanding diversity and creating an inclusive organizational culture. Nominations are due March 20; participants will be selected by April 10. More information, including eligibility criteria and the nomination documents, is online.
Carver scholarship applications (for fall juniors) due April 1
Twenty Roy J. Carver Scholarships are available to ISU students who will start their junior year this fall. Awards, averaging $5,200 and renewable for the senior year, are made to students with great potential and promise who work hard to make ends meet or face debilitating circumstances in their lives. Students should apply online at the Carver Charitable Trust site (click on apply online); faculty and staff are asked to refer worthy student applicants to this scholarship.
Deadline is March 31 for 2017-18 undergraduate research funds
Faculty and staff have a March 31 application deadline to participate in the 2017-18 Undergraduate Research Assistantship program, which provides outstanding juniors and seniors hands-on experience in a formal research environment. The intent is to encourage them to pursue graduate school. Faculty, staff and students should seek out those with similar interests for possible "matches;" preference is given to qualified students and faculty/staff who each ask to work with the other. Student candidates must have filled out the FAFSA financial aid form and be eligible for work-study funding. More information, including program guidelines and application documents, is online. Share your thoughts on west Union Drive proposals
Campus planners in facilities planning and management have shared two design concepts for the reconstruction of Welch Road/Union Drive between Lincoln Way and Bissell Road. The plans cover traffic lanes, crosswalks, sidewalks, campus entrance features, existing parking, CyRide bus stops and more. Members of the university community are invited to review the proposals online and share their input. Comments must be submitted by 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27.
Training for youth program leaders is March 8
The offices of Risk Management, Extension and Outreach, and Conference Planning and Management will offer training that provides youth program leaders, administrators and student organization officers information regarding youth-related policies, procedures and forms for successfully conducting youth programs at ISU. The two-hour training session, offered monthly during spring semester, is for anyone responsible for planning and supervising youth programs or providing administrative support for one. It will be offered 10 a.m.-noon on March 8 (1155 Administrative Services Builidng); and 2-4 p.m. on April 6 and May 10. Preregistration is required; send an email to orm@iastate.edu at least 2 days before the session you wish to attend.
Training offered on serving student veterans
ISU Veterans Center staff will offer a free training session for faculty and staff covering tips and strategies for serving student veterans, military personnel and their family members. Online registration is requested. Dedicated sessions for specific departments or offices also is available; email the veterans center or call 294-9801. The session will be offered twice this spring:

Meet artist selected for Student Innovation Center
Provide your thoughts and input at a campus meet-and-greet reception with Boston-area artist Catherine Widgery and the Student Innovation Center public art committee on Wednesday, Feb. 22 (4:30-5:30 p.m., Christian Petersen Art Museum, Morrill). Widgery has been commissioned to create the public art for the student center. Refreshments will be served.
Lane closure scheduled for Haber Road this weekend
The northbound lane of Haber Road, from 13th Street to the railroad underpass, east of Frederiksen Court student apartments, will be closed for a period this weekend for underground utility work. The closure will start at 6 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, and be completed by 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.
50 degrees or higher? Golf course is open
Veenker Memorial Golf Course opened for business this week; the earliest opening on record. Through the winter season, if the forecasted high temperature for the day is 50 degrees or higher, the course will be open for play. A special pre-season rate is $25 for 9 holes with a cart, $35 for 18 holes with a cart. The performance center will be open for public use only when the course is closed.

Three finalists for chair of the apparel, events and hospitality management department will take part in vision seminars and open forums as part of the interview process. Aging in Iowa is topic of April 5 program
Linda Miller, director of the Iowa Department of Aging, will speak at "Aging in Iowa: Addressing Grand Challenges" on April 5 (3-4 p.m., presentation; 4-5 p.m., reception and poster session, MU Cardinal Room). Faculty and students are invited to present their work during the poster session. Space is limited, so please submit an abstract to Amanda Hillman by midnight March 1. Open forum for final police chief candidate is Friday
The last of four candidates for the assistant vice president/chief of police position will visit campus on Friday, Feb. 10. The open forum for Thomas Phillips, chief of police at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, will be from 2:50 to 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Gold Room. Evaluation forms will be provided on site.
Grant will help library staff complete finding-aid project
The library's special collections and university archives received a $118,825 grant that will support a two-year project to migrate about 1,500 existing and 200 nearly-complete finding aids into a new archives management system. Compiled by library archivists, finding aids are documents that list the details of a collection and help researchers find and use the items in it. The project will focus on collections related to agriculture, rural life, life sciences, engineering and the university's history. The National Historical Publications and Records Commission is the source of the grant.
ISU Faculty Research Day is March 21
ISU Faculty Research Day will be held on March 21 (1-5:30 p.m., MU Great Hall). Faculty from all disciplines are invited to present a poster, deliver a talk, display an exhibit, meet new colleagues and discover connections within Iowa State’s interdisciplinary grand challenge research areas. The event will feature a keynote address by Debi Durham, director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority, a poster session, lightning talks and a hosted networking reception. Pre-valentine art sale at the MU
The Workspace in the Memorial Union will host a Pop Up Art Sale Feb. 9-10 and Feb. 13-14 (10 a.m.-2 p.m. daily, near the bookstore entrance). Pottery, jewelry and other hand-made items created by Workspace students and instructors will be for sale. Most items sell for $5-$20.
Security alert: W-2 request is a con
Your boss doesn't want your W-2. Nor does any other honest person you know. The IRS has issued a warning about the latest ploy making its way across the country. Criminals spoof the email addresses of your acquaintances to try to get you to reveal your or others W-2s, SSNs, income or personal info. Don't. The ISU IT website has more information on how to report these scams.
Undergrad students invited to spring research seminar series
Undergraduate students are invited to attend a spring seminar series, "Research Seminars for Undergraduate Students," that features two speakers each session. Seminars are held each Wednesday through April 19 from 3:10 to 4 p.m. in 2155 Marston Hall. A list of speakers and topics is online.
Cy is delivering Valentines
Mascot Cy will make surprise Valentine deliveries on Feb. 13-14 (during business hours) to locations within 30 miles of Ames. The valentine package includes a dozen roses, custom card and the playing of a love song selected by the sender. The request deadline is 5 p.m. Feb. 9; Cy can make up to 30 deliveries. Cost is $100; proceeds support the Cyclone Spirit Squad.
Register now for ISCORE events
The 17th annual Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE) will be held Friday, March 3 (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Memorial Union). All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend and/or volunteer; registration is free but required. A half-day professional development preconference for university employees, designed to enhance understanding and sensitivity to cultural differences, will be held Wednesday, March 1 (11:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Memorial Union). Registration is free and also required.
GIS facility brings art exhibition to Design on Main Gallery
The geographic information services facility is bringing the "Earth as Art" exhibition to Design on Main Gallery (203 Main St., Ames) Feb. 2-26. The exhibit is a fusion of art and science, offering viewers stunning images of the planet while also teaching them about satellite imagery and geography. Educational activities will be available for children. Gallery hours are Thursdays, 4-7 p.m.; Fridays, 2-5 p.m.; and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Contact Amy Logan to view the exhibit outside its regular hours.
