Summer session ends this week; summer hours next week
The second session of Iowa State's summer term concludes Friday, Aug. 3. Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 20, with Destination Iowa State events for incoming freshman and transfer students getting underway Aug. 16. University offices keeping summer hours should return to regular hours by Aug. 13.
Mental health grant will fund position in student health and wellness
The university's Student Health and Wellness unit (recreation services, student wellness, student counseling and Thielen Student Health Center) has received a $306,000 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The award is $102,000 annually for three years. The funds will cover salary and benefits for a suicide and substance abuse coordinator in the student wellness department, as well as supplies and campus trainings. The coordinator will interact with each of the departments in the unit, campus partners and the Ames community.
Lab safety orientation for grad students scheduled for August
New graduates students this fall who will work in a research lab are the intended audience for a four-hour laboratory safety orientation offered daily Aug. 13-15 (8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 1230 Environmental Health and Safety Service Building). The session provides the tools needed to work safely in a lab and training in hands-on skills. It fulfills the three safety trainings required for general lab workers: core concepts of lab safety, fire safety and fire extinguisher, and emergency response. Youth afternoon camp in the gardens is Aug. 6
Reiman Gardens staff will host an afternoon camp, "Scales and Tails," for children ages 8-12 years on Monday, Aug. 6 (1-5 p.m.). The focus is on insects, animals, ecosystems and natural cycles; the afternoon includes games, crafts and a snack. Cost is $17.50 (members $14); payment and registration are due Aug. 2.
Tickets for Home Free Christmas concert go on sale July 27
Home Free, the a cappella group of five male voices, will bring its "Country Christmas" tour to Ames on Sunday, Dec. 16 (3:30 p.m., Stephens Auditorium). Tickets, $19.50-$59.50, go on sale at noon July 27 via Ticketmaster, including the Stephens ticket office (noon-6 p.m., Tues-Fri.). Two VIP package options, $119.50 and $249.50, also are available.
EH&S updated its hazard reporting tool
Concerned about a hazard or potential hazard in your department or building? Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) has updated its online tool that allows members of the university community to report hazards. Users answer a few questions about the potential hazard and provide their email address with their submission. EH&S staff follow up on all reports in a timely manner. On the EH&S website, click on the "Report a Hazard" icon to get started.
Art lending open house is July 31-Aug. 1
The Memorial Union will hold its art lending open house Tuesday, July 31 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) and Wednesday, Aug. 1 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) in the browsing library on the first floor (food court level). Rent framed posters, paintings and prints for a semester or a year. Most pieces rent for $10-$25. Proceeds support art programs at the Memorial Union.
Submit fall library reserve requests now
Instructors who wish to place required materials on reserve in Parks Library for fall semester should submit requests now. Submission forms (online or printable) are online.
Ray LaMontagne concert tickets go on sale July 20
Singer/songwriter and 2011 Grammy recipient Ray LaMontagne will perform at Stephens Auditorium Friday, Oct. 26, as part of his North America 'Just Passing Through' acoustic tour. Tickets, $35-$65 plus fees, go on sale to the public at noon Friday, July 20, via Ticketmaster, including the Stephens ticket office (noon-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday).
Opening tour for new library exhibit is July 18
The exhibition team for a new exhibit in Parks Library's special collections and university archives will host a tour and Q&A Wednesday, July 18 (10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m., 403 Parks Library). The public is welcome. "Activist Agriculture: Farm Protest in Iowa, 1929-1969" opens July 18 and will be exhibited through January.
Third Rummage RAMPage is July 27-Aug. 2
Rummage RAMPage has added a 7th day to its third edition. This year's collection and sale, targeting renters who are moving around Aug. 1 -- but open to everyone -- will run from Saturday, July 28, through Thursday, Aug. 2. The first day, Friday, July 27, is for donation drop-off only. The intent is to keep usable furniture out of the landfill and give it a second home. Co-hosted by the city of Ames and ISU's office of sustainability, it will be held at the Ames Intermodal Facility, 129 Hayward Ave., in campustown. Pickup service is available by request ($25, ISU students $10) for those with donations but no way to transport them to the ramp. Acceptable items to donate.
Gentle Doctor Cafe will be in transition during early July
The temporary location for the Gentle Doctor Cafe at the College of Veterinary Medicine will be shuttered after business on Friday, June 30. The cafe is scheduled to reopen in its new location in the nearly-complete Commons on Monday, July 16 (tentative). The Commons itself should be ready for use by mid-August.
Mental health crisis training to be held Aug. 7
On Tuesday, Aug. 7 (8 a.m.-5 p.m., Hach Hall atrium), Student Counseling Services is offering for the final time this summer a training program, RESPOND: Partnering for Campus Mental Health, for faculty, staff or administrators who want to learn more about how to respond to students or colleagues experiencing a mental health crisis or developing a mental health problem. ISU Wellbeing is covering registration costs. For more information or to register, go to the RESPOND website.
Reynolds names retired CC president to fill regents vacancy
Jim Lindenmayer of Ottumwa was appointed to the state Board of Regents June 29 by Gov. Kim Reynolds to fill the unexpired term of Subhash Sahai, Webster City, who resigned earlier this month. Lindenmayer's term on the board expires April 30, 2019. He served as president of Indian Hills Community College, Ottumwa, from 2001 to 2013, capping a 33-year career at IHCC. The Iowa Senate must confirm the appointment when it convenes next winter.
Support for Learn@ISU will transition to Solution Center
Beginning Monday, July 9, customer support for the training registration website Learn@ISU will move from Environmental Health and Safety to Information Technology's Solution Center, 192 Parks Library. The move to the Solution Center will provide users one point of support for various systems on campus. In addition to centralized support, the Solution Center provides additional hours of support currently not offered. To contact the Solution Center, call 294-4000, or email solution@iastate.edu.

'Die Fledermaus' is a farce of mistaken identity, flirtation and a practical joke with unanticipated consequences. It opens Nov. 7 in Fisher Theater.
