Gardens hosts Saturday matinees this month
Reiman Gardens is hosting a family-friendly movie series in January, with two indoor matinees (10 a.m. and 1 p.m.) every Saturday this month. Admission is free for all kids 17 years and younger, ISU students and adult members; others pay regular garden admissions rates. Popcorn, candy and soda will be sold. The titles selected are:
- Jan. 6: "Cars"
- Jan. 13: "Beauty and the Beast" (2017 live-action version)
- Jan. 20: "Tangled"
- Jan. 27: "Sing"
North half of lot 67 reserved for contractor
The north section of parking lot 67 (west side of Elm Hall, primarily for general staff permits) will be closed for several weeks while contractors work to repair the eroded slopes along College Creek.
Madrigal Dinner ticket sales close Jan. 8
Iowa State's 53rd annual Madrigal Dinners will be held Friday-Saturday, Jan. 12-13 (5:30 p.m. social hour, 6:30 p.m. dinner, MU Great Hall). Tickets are $52 ($46 for ISU students and senior citizens). Ticket sales will end at 5 p.m. Jan. 5 for the Friday performance and at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 for the Saturday performance. Order online via Midwestix or print the order form and return it to the Student Activities Center, 1560 Memorial Union, during regular business hours.
Elevator outages during winter break
The Forker Building elevator is out of service until Jan. 5 for modifications to the controls systems. It should be fully operational for the start of the spring semester.
Shorter-term elevator outages will occur in Kildee Hall and Vet Med during the semester break while modifications are made to elevators. Each building will have another elevator available for use during an outage. Notifications have be sent to the building occupants.
Next steps for the campus climate survey
A summary of findings will be presented at public meetings, likely in late spring.
Free New York Times to continue, Wall Street Journal may be added
The library will pick up the tab to retain a free campuswide subscription to the New York Times that student government senators voted against renewing last month. In addition, students, faculty and staff may gain new access next year to the Wall Street Journal.
Women selected for ISU calendar to be honored at Jan. 10 reception
The Catt Center will host a reception Jan. 10 (3:30-5 p.m., MU Sun Room) to honor the 12 students, faculty and staff members selected for its 2018 "Women Impacting ISU" calendar. A program will begin at 4 p.m. Free copies of the calendar poster will be distributed. The honorees are:
- Students: Rachael Barnes, biological systems engineering and global resource systems; Emily Barske, journalism and mass communication; and Stacy Ko, counseling psychology
- Faculty: Daniela Dimitrova, Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication; Kayla Sander, accounting; Eulanda Sanders, apparel, events and hospitality management; and Judy Vance, mechanical engineering
- Staff: LeQuetia Ancar, College of Engineering student services; Sherri Angstrom, Faculty Senate; Monica Howard, College of Veterinary Medicine student programs; Erin Pederson, Student Counseling Service; and Barbara Woods, ISU Extension and Outreach
Library facilities modify hours during winter break
During winter break, Parks Library will be open Dec. 18-22, Dec. 27-29 and Jan. 2-5 with modified hours (7:30 a.m.-5 p.m.). The library will be closed Dec. 23-26, Dec. 30-Jan. 1, and Jan. 6-7. Normal library hours resume on Jan. 8.
Greeting card upcycling program is discontinued
The upcycling source for Iowa State's annual greeting card recycling program (St. Jude's Ranch for Children) discontiued its program due to rising costs. Campus Live Green! leaders encourage students and employees to continue recycling their cards through paper recycling programs. One Ames option is the Ames Golden Kiwanis' paper recycling collection trailer, located year-round at the CENEX station, 919 E. Lincoln Way.
Senior scholarship applications are due Feb. 2
Juniors are encouraged to apply by Feb. 2, 2018, for the David J. Henry all-University Leadership and Academic Excellence Award, which would provide $2,000 for their senior year at Iowa State. Selection is base on leadership experience and ability, academic merit and potential in the applicant's field of study. Underground work at Lincoln Way/Beach intersection scheduled over break
Crews for the city of Ames will perform maintenance repairs on a large-diameter pipe beneath the intersection of Lincoln Way and Beach over winter break. The work will be performed at night to minimize conflicts with traffic, and a detour around the work site will be provided. The actual date(s) for the repairs will be shared when they are set.
FPM launches a speakers bureau
Facilities Planning and Management (FPM) has started a speakers bureau to connect the experience and expertise of staff members with campus and community interests and needs. About a dozen FPM staff members are on board to provide presentations, tours, technical assistance for class projects and more. Contact a staff member directly to make arrangements for their assistance.
Spalding reappointed to Business dean post
A four-year veteran of the post, David Spalding has received a five-year appointment.
Five questions for an engaging officer
Dwight Hinson, a former Cyclone All-American wrestler, helped establish the ISU Police engagement and inclusion officer initiative, which has more than doubled in size since 2015.
Visitors code of conduct is in the works
Creating a welcoming and inclusive experience for all at Iowa State is one of the primary goals of the university's latest strategic plan. A visitors code of conduct is in the works to help reinforce the idea.
Going in circles to drain away stress
Students have numerous options for relieving the dread of Dead Week, including a new one this fall with ancient roots.
Dec. 7 Cyclone Club luncheon features Coach Kevin Dresser
Cyclone wrestling head coach Kevin Dresser is the scheduled speaker at the Dec. 7 Cyclone Club luncheon (noon-1 p.m., Reiman Ballroom, Alumni Center, doors open at 11:30 a.m.). The event is free and open to the public; an optional lunch, catered by Hy-Vee, costs $12.
Tickets on sale for 'Dancing With the Stars'
Fans of season 25 of "Dancing With the Stars" can see their favorite performers live on stage at Stephens Auditorium Feb. 5, 2018 (7:30 p.m.). Tickets, from $39.50 to $79.50, are available at the Stephens ticket office (Monday-Friday, noon to 6 p.m.) or online through Ticketmaster.
Walk safely across campus this winter
Environmental health and safety (EHS) wants the Iowa State community to remember to walk carefully across campus this winter. Plan your route, be alert for icy patches and wear appropriate footwear. Last chance ('til January!) ice cream
The Dairy Science Club's final Wednesday ice cream sale of fall semester is today (11 a.m.-1 p.m., near the north doors of Lush Auditorium in Kildee Hall). Choose from 10 flavors: vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, triple chocolate, Butterfinger, Reese's, Oreo, Snickers, Twix and Heath caramel. The price is $1 for an 8-oz. cup.
New title for Foreman reflects expanded role
Margo Foreman, who will continue to direct the office of equal opportunity, has a new title: assistant vice president for diversity and inclusion and equal opportunity. The expanded capacity more accurately reflects the role she plays in the diversity and inclusion division's growth and development, as well as additional duties she will take on.
Volunteers needed for upcoming Science Bowl competitions
Approximately 150 volunteers are needed for the 2018 high school and middle school Science Bowl competitions, Jan. 27 and Feb. 24, respectively. Volunteers will serve as moderators, scientific judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers. Individuals also are needed to help set up the competition rooms prior to each event. Register online to volunteer. Volunteers will be notified of their assignments prior to the events. Volunteer training will occur in January and February.
Tickets for Ron White comedy show go on sale Dec. 8
Stand-up comedian Ron White will perform Friday, March 2 (8 p.m.), at Stephens Auditorium. Tickets, $45, $55 and $69, go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, via Ticketmaster, including the Stephens Auditorium ticket office. Since 2004, White, nominated twice for a Grammy Award and a veteran of the popular Blue Collar Comedy Tour (2000-06), has been one of the top three grossing stand-up comedians on tour in this country.
Application deadline extended for student affairs scholarships
The application deadline for 2018-19 undergraduate scholarships offered by the student affairs division has been extended to Jan. 8. Guidelines and application forms are online. Contact the the student affairs office (studentaffairs@iastate.edu, 515-294-4420) with questions. The scholarships included:
- Multicultural Student Scholarships ($2,000 each), four awards for African American, Native American and multicultural students
- Kappa Alpha Theta High Flyer Award ($10,000), recognizes an outstanding female leader with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 who will be a senior in 2018-19
- President’s Leadership Initiative Awards ($2,000 each), six awards that recognize student leadership
- Sesquicentennial Leadership Award ($3,000), recognizes a junior or senior (fall 2018) who has developed a significant, unique project
